A Mind Full of Elsewheres

A Letter From the Past

It was a cold Friday night. Molly had finished walking her dog,

She had a long tiring week at work and decided to stay home for a change. It had been a while since she spent a Friday night without meeting her friends. Usually, she would be all decked up to hit a club with her friends by evening.

With her TV remote in one hand and phone in the other, she was getting anxious about spending the time alone. She continued playing the Netflix series, A letter from the past that she had wanted to binge-watch. It was so cliched that she did not mention it to her friends.

Her mind was looking for the adrenaline rush the whole time and causing more anxiety. She ordered some food and decided to take a short walk outside to clear her head. She wore her North Face jacket told herself that this would be her last winter while wearing her gloves and boots.

On the way, she slowly started feeling hungry, so she shortened her walk and headed back home. The food delivery car had just delivered her food and left. She picked up her food, emptied her mailbox, and entered home.

The white envelope addressed to her in familiar handwriting caught her attention. She hardly received any personal mail after the last one sent by her father before he passed away. It had been five years since she received one.

The food lost its attention to that mystery mail. Molly opened the mail while sitting on the couch. Her mind was racing with thoughts on who it could be. She slowly rested her back against the sofa and forgot about the food as she started to read. After five minutes, she finished reading it, but she continued to hold it.

How did I not see it coming?.

The life she left behind slowly peaked into her mind and heart. Rob’s face appeared all over the letter with that infectious smile. She fell for his possessiveness under the blanket of love.

Her eyes couldn’t hold the tears anymore.

How did I not see it coming? She never found the answer to that question.

Her life seemed perfect with him. Parents liked him; her friends liked him; he protected her in college whenever she got into trouble. Little did she know that his possessiveness would cause irreparable harm.

The events of that day unfolded in front of her. They had been having fights for a while after someone told him that she planned to leave him. He was mad, and she had tried her best to convince him. But that day, he was different.

He was rude from the morning, didn’t eat food, and kept murmuring something about his dad. His dad was in prison for killing his mom. He never told the reason, and she never crossed her line though she was curious.

She tried her best that day to make him feel better and explain that she never intended to leave him. He got calmed a little in the evening and went out to his shop. She felt a little relieved and went home. Later that night, she received a call from his friend that he met with an accident while returning from the shop in the evening. She frantically called him, and he was at home. He said he got just first aid from a clinic nearby as he did not have money to admit himself into a nearby hospital. She got worried and left for his house with some cash. As soon as she reached his home, she knocked on the door, and he opened it. She asked him what had happened. He did not say a word but was looking straight into his eyes. He was drunk.

She was shocked and angry. She yelled at Rob and asked why he did that. He kept quiet. She could hear his friends murmuring in the room. She figured they all had been drinking. She took the liberty, entered his house, went to the room, and angrily looked at his friends. She did not realize Rob was standing right behind her. His right hand covered her mouth, and his left hand held her hands behind her. His friends stood up and approached her. She froze with the thought that Rob was holding her still.

She could not fully remember what happened next, but it crippled her for life. She could not have a casual conversation with a guy, all her friends were girls, and she decided to remain single.

She read the last line in the letter once again, written by her mom, “…the doctors could not save Rob. He got what he deserved. Molly, I will always be sorry for what happened to you. Hope you come back and live with me.“

With a big sigh, she put the letter down and got up to grab her food, wiping her tears.
